To offset this situation and to bring about change, Instructor Miss Eula Yulo (Rufa Mae Quinto) suggests that they sponsor a quiz show. Since their childhood days, Atoy (Christopher de Leon) and Ruben (Sen. Jinggoy Estrada) were the closest of friends. It was not surprising that they remained the best of friends even decades later when Atoy and Ruben had their own families. Atoy became a successful businessman, married to the beautiful Tere (Dawn Zulueta) and with two children, Jonie (AJ Perez) and Katrina (Empress Shuck). Ruben, the more proud and headstrong of the two, found a wife in Eden (Maricel Laxa), with two sons Benjie (Ryan Julio) and Dodie (Justine Plummer).

The relationship between Atoy and Ruben remained the same through the years. Despite their closeness, Atoy was literally Rubens kuya, going out of his way to take care of Ruben whenever he found himself in trouble or even giving him a sense of control. Even the wives and their children knew about this: the two families were so intertwined that they were closer than their real relatives.

Baler (2008) Filipino Movie DVDRip with English Subs

Synopsis:

Baler is a tale of the overwhelming love of a young Filipina named Feliza Reyes (Anne Curtis) and a Spanish-Filipino soldier, Celso Resurrecion (Jericho Rosales). This Metro Manila Film Fest entry is set during the Siege of Baler, the battle that took place in 1898 between the Filipino forces and the 57-man rifle battalion of the Spanish military.

Feliza is the beautiful daughter of Nanding (Phillip Salvador), the leader of the rebel movement whose goal is to completely wipe out the Spanish soldiers stationed in the town of Baler. This is precisely why she and Celso have to keep their love a secret. Nanding can never accept Celso, a half-Indio, half-Spanish soldier who chooses to serve the enemy rather than the movement that’s fighting for independence and freedom.

Feliza is in love with the man her father despises. Who and what could stop the two young people who are madly in love with each other?

As the war continues, Celso and Feliza struggle for the autonomy of their love even if both of them are torn between their strong feelings for each other and their loyalty to their chosen path. Celso’s allegiance is still with the Spanish army while Feliza has to respect her father’s ongoing fight with the Spanish soldiers. Eventually, Celso’s love for Feliza rises above anything else because his loyalty belongs where his love is. He decides to desert the Spanish troops and reunite with Feliza, even as he knows that it means his own death.

While we are drawn to this endearing story of love that knows no time, place and race, we are also taken back to the past to take a peek into what transpired behind the walls of the church of Baler. This is where the last Spanish contingent (who were not aware that the war had actually ended) heroically defended Baler against the Filipino forces for 337 grueling days.

The vision of the producers and director Rahyan is to craft a unique film by shooting each segment in real time.

This means that each story was done in one long take with absolute no cuts just like a theater production.

Director Rahyan Carlos expounds, ‘Life is like a coin.

You can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once’.

In an interview, Robert Seña, one of the actors and also part of the production team elaborates, “life has no rehearsals, no cuts. You only live it once.”

Making the film more ambitious is the fact that each episode was shot between 13 to 20 minutes.

On the picturesque island of Cuyo, Palawan, an illegal Taiwanese fishing vessel, docks carrying a fisherman named Muo Sei, a man looking for something or someone with the name Ploning. He has from sunrise to sundown to look for this “Ploning”.

In his search, Ploning is revealed to be the island’s town belle of the year 1982. A dutiful daughter to patriarch Susing, a committed supporter to grieving Intang, an honorary sister to extended family Nieves and Toting a wise ally to simpleton Alma, a supporter to broken-hearted Siloy and a co-mother to half-paralyzed Juaning. A woman so important that the town barely notices the absence of rain because of her presence in their lives.

Despite her renowned beauty, everyone is puzzled why this 30-year-old spinster refuses to get married and still hopefully waits for her beau, Tomas, to come back. Tomas left for Manila when Ploning was 16 years old and there has been no sign of him coming back any time soon. Ploning’s silent demeanor adds to the mystery and depth of love that no one seems to understand.. In the center of this, is a 6-year-old boy named Digo who has built his world around the affection and care of Ploning, his foster mother. But his entire world crashes as he learns that Ploning has plans of going to Manila to look for Tomas. Thus, leaving the boy with his bed-ridden mother, Juaning and his strict older brother, Veling. Digo tries everything to stop Ploning from leaving and finds an ally in the town’s visitor, the beautiful town nurse, Celeste. Celeste claims to have known and fallen in love with a man named Tomas and tried to follow him in Cuyo to find out if he loved him back. Ploning, with security and so much faith, denies that her Tomas and the man Celeste fell in love with are the same man. On the day of the fiesta, the rain comes and Ploning seems to be missing. Digo’s feeling of abandonment leads to a tragedy that grieves the town. But no one was prepared for the secret that Ploning has kept all these years. A secret that exemplifies the selfless love that withstands blood, pain and even time.

BLACKOUT (2007) [PINOY] DVDRiP DivX NoSubs [Tagalog]

A sharp, moody thriller cloaked in genuinely affecting social realist trappings, the Filipino offering Blackout parlays strong performances and atmosphere into a hazy murder mystery built inside the ill-defined mental timeline of an alcoholic slum lord who, as far as he can recall, accidentally ran into and killed his neighbor’s daughter while driving drunk late one night. Without giving anything away, suffice to say all is not as it seems to our (very) anti-hero.

Something of a cinematic UFO, Blackout’s closest cousin might be South Koreas Sorum (2001), another thriller focused on madness fostered by guilt, set in a deteriorating tenement. In both instances “slice-of-life” mechanics ride shotgun with creative suspense devices, the married rhythms providing a unique and involving structure.

Prone to blackouts, which may be enhanced but not necessarily caused by his drinking, middle-aged Gil has tee-totaled his way into a bad marriage, poor business decisions, and a less-than-honest relationship with his loving young son Nino. Waking up one night passed out by Nino’s bed, Gil discovers his car keys still in the ignition and the body of Isabella, his neighbor Belen’s young daughter, lifeless beneath his rear tires. Panicking, he hides the body and attempts, successfully at first, to turn over a new leaf on all fronts. Guilt in the form of a series of increasingly surreal hallucinations (some involving Nino’s professions of having seen Isabella) eventually turns Gil back to the bottle and forces an unraveling of the details surrounding what happened that bleary night, culminating in the discovery of a disturbingly warped emotional bond with Belen.

Gil’s as unreliable a narrator as you’ll find, muddying any sense of everyday truth for himself right down to the broken eyeglasses he refuses to fix. He’s a drunk, a lousy father, and quite probably a killer exactly the sort of dark vessel missing from most modern suspense films. Robin Padilla’s naturalistic performance sells perfectly Gil’s see-saw moods, and is defined by his relationship with Nino. Above all his failings, Gil’s inability to understand what it means to be a parent is most damning for the audience, and yet Padilla imbues these scenes with sympathetic turns throughout.

Director Ato Bautista’s second film, Blackout is one hell of a rebuke of the sophomore slump theory. An omnipresent minimalist score and restrained but creative editing help enhance the feeling of our being given a window into both Filipino life and Gil’s scattered mind, and a scene of medical violence (Gil’s removal of glass from his hand, courtesy of a smashed liquor bottle) is one of the more authentic and intense in recent memory. The film’s concluding sequence amps the suspense considerably, offering a rock-solid scare and jarring final image.

One hopes Blackout is capable of parlaying its combination of artistic and populist success into a broader release. In a world where fair-skinned, long-haired spirits have been given carte-blanche to populate multiplexes and video store shelves, a dose of realism mixed in goes a very long way.

Louie receives a text message from the province that his father Ulding had a heart attack. Louie rushes to drive home from Manila only to find out that the message was nothing but a prank. Louie then senses something eerie about his hometown. He finds out there have been several killings in the area all done in the same manner. Apparently, the victim first hears some rumbling noise that is before they are found dead all covered with mud.

Louie learns that his childhood sweetheart Elma is the most recent victim. He visits her wake and is forced to confront an unresolved issue with Elma’s husband, Nestor, who was once Louie’s bestfriend.

As the day draws to an end, Louie is also forced to resolve his long-standing conflict with his father who is now married to their servant. Cora, a simple, earthy mystic. Ulding has refused all of Louie’s invitations to stay with him in Manila because of his new family.

When the killings move closer to home and threatens Louie’s family, he discovers for himself how he had been estranged from his roots and now must face his past with the horror of what is to happen.

Raffy and Andrew were orphaned as kids and had only each other to depend on. Wanting a better future, Raffy has spent the last nine years of his life working in Dubai. And in the company of Raffy’s Filipino group of friends, he is well-received like family. Then Andrew meets Faye, one of Raffy’s many girlfriends in Dubai.

Faye and Andrew hit it off well in spite of their age difference. She becomes his guide, comfort and lover. Seeing the two however, Raffy realizes that he still loves Faye. Three dead husbands and twelve children to take care of. What is the modern day working mother to do?
